A Shard

All events that lie beyond the span of a single life are ancient --
Ancient as the naked boy who visited Eckhart in his study
As Able snuffed out by Cain's rage,
As Adam, willingly beguiled.
Ancient is not so long ago.
The beach is cluttered with ancient shards of vessels that once
carried orange soda or root bear to eager lips intent also
        on other delicacies.
What boy crashed these bottles against the surf battered rocks,
And to what obscure but inflamed purpose?
It cannot be reconstructed.
Knowing I shall soon be ancient too,
Ancient as the waves, I leave for you
This shard, deliberately constructed.
